artist statement: deanna slonski

"Yukon or Bust!........it’s the journey that counts"

This series is inspired by some of Deanna Slonski’s fondest childhood memories. She spent her younger years living in maintenance camps along the Alaska Highway. Deanna spent much of the summer months visiting with the tourists that passed through, and was fascinated by the caravans of streamline trailers, and motor homes. “It was a game to count the number of license plates from each state or province.” She remembers.

Deanna was particularly amused by the vehicles that would have “YUKON OR BUST”, scratched on the dusty windows. “It was the idea of their travels being such a HUGE adventure to them, and yet this was the place I called home. This is where my family would go camping every weekend… the Yukon was our back yard”

The images chosen for this series are of visitors and some family who did indeed enjoy their journey……
